Description

8008 Wisconsin Avenue brings vibrant mixed-uses to Bethesda’s Woodmont Triangle, an area that aims to promote an active community of both local residents and businesses. The building’s energizing colors and contemporary design create a local landmark while contextual responsiveness enhances the pedestrian experience. A landscaped urban plaza with seating and bicycle racks creates a central community gathering area at the most active intersection – Woodmont and Cordell Avenues. A storefront window system expands from the corner around two facades, keeping pedestrians engaged with retail as they circulate throughout the Triangle. Floor to ceiling glass maximizes daylighting and establishes an attractive corridor to support small business success, which is a priority in the redevelopment of the site.

Contemporary materials are sensitive to the existing built environment. The shorter frontages – Wisconsin and Woodmont Avenues – use a familiar warm-colored masonry to frame the sweeping glass façade on Cordell Avenue. Its curved window wall system, made of high-performance glass, allows maximum clarity without sacrificing sustainability goals. Animated by a tinted glass grid and balconies lined with bright metal panels, the design is modern but approachable. Sharp edges are balanced by an overarching contour that connects Wisconsin Avenue to Woodmont Avenue. A stone rectangle encloses a lively iteration of the larger scheme, and links the materiality of the shorter frontages. The rear of the building faces an existing residential neighborhood. Two shades of masonry provide connection to the architectural style of existing homes. Increased opacity and fewer, smaller windows promote privacy.

The residential lobby is located on a decidedly calmer exposure, allowing residents to enjoy proximity to retail without imposition on privacy and tranquility. Accessed on Wisconsin Avenue, the lobby includes a social room, business center, and pet grooming center. Fifteen stories above ground, the rooftop offers luxurious amenities and views of Bethesda and Washington, DC. Here, residents can enjoy the 2,100-sf clubhouse that includes a game room and fitness center, as well as an outdoor pool, grilling station, bar and ample seating situated beneath a decorative sun shade. Intensive green roof plantings reduce the building’s heat island effect and provide additional leisure space.
