Interior Design for a 25,000-sf office space.

Tompkins Builders approached WDG to design their headquarters office space at 1110 Vermont Avenue, NW Washington, D.C. Acting as the contractor of the project, the Design/Build delivery process allowed for true integration of creative design into a functional and environmentally conscientious space.

The project's success was predicated on understanding Tomkins corporate culture and expressing that attitude into a built form. This new office is an accessible and enlivening space that showcases the firm without being pretentious. The use of warm natural materials, such as wood and stone, helps aid in reflecting and diffusing light, which provides an open feel to the space. The sleek lobby opens to workspace that is efficiently utilized and shared by all levels of staff within the company. The space is characterized by aluminum framed demountable partitions with glass and wood doors that bring light into the core of the space.

The expedited delivery process required a steady focus on logistics, budget, constructability, and quality design. WDG and Tomkins worked together to obtain skilled craftsmen, procuring high-quality, locally available material. A focused team effort that involved daily — at times hourly — communication between the architects/designers and Tompkins Construction drove the timely completion of the project,  which was completed within eight weeks from the start date.

In 2009, NAIOP Maryland awarded the project with the Award of Excellence in Best Interiors for 10,001-25,000 sf.
